Nowell will teach a beginning and intermediate woodcarving class.

Classes are held at the UT's Main Campus, Knoxville,
TN
You can
use Larry's tools for the class, however when you get ready to buy
tools, here is a list of recommended tools: Buy the best you can
afford. Larry prefers the full size Pfeil tools: #5-8,
#5-20,
#7-8, #7-10,
#9-15, #11-3,
#11-5, #11-7, a
second #11-7 to be modified,
#11-10,
#12-4, #12-10.
Buy those listed in
RED
first.
You
will also need a mallet (Larry prefers a 30 oz. mallet), safety glove,
thumb-guard, a couple of knives, ruler, pencils, band aids and dividers.

Class 1
Introduction. Collect class fee and signed waiver. Safety.
Show and tell. Introduction to tools. Cuts for each tool.
Things to remember: 1.
Use sharp polished tools. 2. Slice the wood. 3.
Cut across the grain or with the grain. 4. Compress the
grain back against itself to cut it. 5. Cut from the short
grain to the longer grain.
Class 2
Show and tell.
Sharpening and polishing. Relief carving of a flower.
Class 3
Show and tell.
Relief carving and class critique of carvings.
Class 4
Show and tell.
Carving a western boot.
Class 5
Begin carving a
face.
Class 6
Finish the face, class critique and discuss what comes next.
